Securing VoIP Networks

Author(s) : Peter Thermos, Ari Takanen
Publisher : Addison Wesley
Year : Aug 2007
ISBN 10 : 0321437349
ISBN 13 : 9780321437341
Language : English

Tomorrow, all communications will happen over IP. In the past, telecom operators handled most communications, and the main business for them was voice communication. In reality, almost all last-mile communications today still happen over the conventional telecom infrastructure. The backbone of the Internet has been going through a fast transition to faster and faster fiber optics and digital data transfer. The era of analog communications has been over for some time already.

Today, people speak of Voice over IP, but a better name for the Next Generation Networks is Everything over IP (EoIP). And all of that communication will be wireless. But what does that have to do with the topic of this book? It means the world has to finally wake up to the security of the communications networks.

To be secure, you have to understand that wireless networks are always open. While in traditional telephone networks all the switches were kept behind locked doors and all the cabling was protected, in wireless technology there are no cables and everyone has access to wireless access points. One compromised infrastructure component, and the entire network is compromised. One virus-contaminated access device, and everyone in the network will be contaminated.

This book is built around voice as the application to be secured, but the principles apply to any communications. Studying this book should be obligatory to all students in computer engineering and computer science, not only due to its content and deep understanding of VoIP security, but also to allow them to learn how to apply the best practices in other fields, no matter what their future field of study will be. The key to learning is not only studying things and memorizing the various topics, but learning how to apply the best practices of other fields in your own. Combining the best practices of traditional telecommunications, e-mail, and the web into new next-generation technologies is essential to be able to build reliable and usable communication technologies. Voice over IP is potentially the killer application, destroying conventional communication networks and creating a new IP-based communication infrastructure.

The Oxford Book of Health Foods

Health foods and dietary supplements are widely used throughout the world - it is estimated that more than seventy million people in Europe regularly buy these products, and it is a billion dollar business in the USA. Health foods include vitamins, minerals, cereals, nuts, herbal medicines, functional foods, and many others. A large number of people use these foods in the belief that they contribute to their general health, while, in most countries, little or no information is given on products explaining their therapeutic values. The Oxford Book of Health Foods begins with an account of modern concepts of human nutrition, followed by a series of over one hundred accounts of individual health foods and dietary supplements. In all cases the importance of these products in human health is explained, and, for herbal medicines, the evidence for their claimed therapeutic value is given, and toxic effects are described. Full-colour illustrations accompany these accounts. The Oxford Book of Health Foods will be of interest not just to health professionals, but to all people with an interest in health foods and healthy eating. The text is supplemented throughout by beautifully drawn botanical illustrations.

Computer Viruses: from theory to applications

Computer Viruses: from theory to applications (Collection IRIS)
9782287239397 | (2287239391) | Springer | 2005 | 3 MB | RS | FF

This book deals with computer viruses envisaged from three different points of view, namely the theoretical fundamentals of computer virology, algorithmic and practical aspects of viruses and their potential applications to various areas. The theoretical formalization by means of Turing machines, self-reproducing automata and recursive functions enable a precise and exhaustive description of the different types of malware. It follows that the main stakes of computer defense and antiviral fighting are easily highlighted. Detailed analysis of the source code for representative members of each virus/worm family allows the reader to grasp the basic algorithmic aspects involved in self-reproducing codes. The C programming language has been systematically used for a better understanding of the considered codes.

The purpose of this book is to propose a teaching approach to understand what computer viruses1 really are and how they work. To do this, three aspects are covered ranging from theoretical fundamentals, to practical applications and technical features; fully detailed, commented source codes of viruses as well as inherent applications are proposed. So far, the applications-oriented aspects have hardly ever been addressed through the scarce existing literature devoted to computer viruses.

The obvious question that may come to the reader's mind is: why did the author write on a topic which is likely to offend some people? The motivation is definitely not provocation; the original reason for writing this book comes from the following facts. For roughly a decade, it turns out that antiviral defense finds it more and more difficult to organize and quickly respond to viral attacks which took place during the last four years (remember the programs caused by the release of worms, such as Sapphire, Blaster or Sobig, for example). There is a growing feeling among users ?C and not to say among the general public ?C that worldwide attacks give antivirus developers too short a notice. Current viruses are capable of spreading substantially faster than antivirus companies can respond.

As a consequence, we can no longer afford to rely solely on antivirus programs to protect against viruses and the knowledge in the virus field is wholly in the hands of the antiviral community which is totally reluctant to share it. Moreover, the problems associated with antiviral defense are complex by nature, and technical books dedicated to viruses are scarce, which does not make the job easy for people interested in this ever changing field.

Internet Forensics

Because it's so large and unregulated, the Internet is a fertile breeding ground for all kinds of scams and schemes. Usually it's your credit card number they're after, and they won't stop there. Not just mere annoyances, these scams are real crimes, with real victims. Now, thanks to Internet Forensics from O'Reilly, there's something you can do about it.

This practical guide to defending against Internet fraud gives you the skills you need to uncover the origins of the spammers, con artists, and identity thieves that plague the Internet. Targeted primarily at the developer community, Internet Forensics shows you how to extract the information that lies hidden in every email message, web page, and web server on the Internet. It describes the lengths the bad guys will go to cover their tracks, and offers tricks that you can use to see through their disguises. You'll also gain an understanding for how the Internet functions, and how spammers use these protocols to their devious advantage.

The book is organized around the core technologies of the Internet-email, web sites, servers, and browsers. Chapters describe how these are used and abused and show you how information hidden in each of them can be revealed. Short examples illustrate all the major techniques that are discussed. The ethical and legal issues that arise in the uncovering of Internet abuse are also addressed.

Not surprisingly, the audience for Internet Forensics is boundless. For developers, it's a serious foray into the world of Internet security; for weekend surfers fed up with spam, it's an entertaining and fun guide that lets them play amateur detective from the safe confines of their home or office.

Advanced Modern Algebra

This book's organizing principle is the interplay between groups and rings, where "rings" includes the ideas of modules. It contains basic definitions, complete and clear theorems (the first with brief sketches of proofs), and gives attention to the topics of algebraic geometry, computers, homology, and representations. More than merely a succession of definition-theorem-proofs, this text put results and ideas in context so that students can appreciate why a certain topic is being studied, and where definitions originate. Chapter topics include groups; commutative rings; modules; principal ideal domains; algebras; cohomology and representations; and homological algebra. For individuals interested in a self-study guide to learning advanced algebra and its related topics.

Document Engineering: Analyzing and Designing Documents for Business Informatics and Web Services

Product Details

  • Hardcover: 728 pages
  • Publisher: The MIT Press (August 1, 2005)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0262072610
  • ISBN-13: 978-0262072618
  • Book Description
Much of the business transacted on the Web today takes place through information exchanges made possible by using documents as interfaces. For example, what seems to be a simple purchase from an online bookstore actually involves at least three different business collaborations — between the customer and the online catalog to select a book; between the bookstore and a credit card authorization service to verify and charge the customer’s account; and between the bookstore and the delivery service with instructions for picking up and delivering the book to the customer. Document engineering is needed to analyze, design, and implement these Internet information exchanges. This book is an introduction to the emerging field of document engineering.

The authors, both leaders in the development of document engineering and other e-commerce initiatives, analyze document exchanges from a variety of perspectives. Taking a qualitative view, they look at patterns of document exchanges as components of business models; looking at documents in more detail, they describe techniques for analyzing individual transaction patterns and the role they play in the overall business process. They describe techniques for analyzing, designing, and encoding document models, including XML, and discuss the techniques and architectures that make XML a unifying technology for the next generation of e-business applications. Finally, they go beyond document models to consider management and strategic issues — the business model, or the vision, that the information exchanged in these documents serves.

VoIP Hacks Tips and Tools for Internet Telephony

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is gaining a lot of attention these days, as more companies and individuals switch from standard telephone service to phone service via the Internet. The reason is simple: A single network to carry voice and data is easier to scale, maintain, and administer. As an added bonus, it's also cheaper, because VoIP is free of the endless government regulations and tariffs imposed upon phone companies.

VoIP is simply overflowing with hack potential, and VoIP Hacks is the practical guide from O'Reilly that presents these possibilities to you. It provides dozens of hands-on projects for building a VoIP network, showing you how to tweak and customize a multitude of exciting things to get the job done. Along the way, you'll also learn which standards and practices work best for your particular environment. Among the quick and clever solutions showcased in the book are those for:

  • gauging VoIP readiness on an enterprise network
  • using SIP, H.323, and other signaling specifications
  • providing low-layer security in a VoIP environment
  • employing IP hardphones, analog telephone adapters, and softPBX servers
  • dealing with and avoiding the most common VoIP deployment mistakes

Cards As Weapons

Oh, how I would dearly love to own a copy of this book. I first heard about it some time in the mid 90s, when I saw a TV documentary about the amazing Ricky Jay. It was the bit where he cut a pencil in half by throwing an ordinary playing card at it that got me really hooked. I practiced a bit, and got to the point where I could spin a card all the way across the room, but I didn't take it any further than that.

Cards as Weapons was first published in 1977, and has been out of print since then. Today is the first time I've seen the book for sale on Ebay. (Admittedly, I've only been looking since last summer.) But at a cool $750, I don't think I'll be placing any bids. There's a copy available through Amazon.com for $295, but even this is too expensive. I'm more interested in the text than in the book itself, so I'm hoping that maybe some day an enterprising small publisher might pick up the rights and do a new edition.

SEO Book by Aaron Wall

What topics does the SEO Book cover?
SEO, pay per click marketing, conventional marketing, conversion tips, copywriting, usability, web history, and web design.

Some people fail at SEO because they look at it as an entirely isolated mechanical issue. Usually the sites which are most reliant upon search engines are the sites which are hardest hit by algorithm updates.

By giving you tips about other web related issues it helps ensure your marketing techniques are more holistic and will stand the test of time. SEO is also covered in exceptional detail, offering everything from keyword research, to site submission, to on page optimization, to link building.

I have also read a ton of search algorithm research and ate dinner or hung out with well known search engineers working at Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft. Some stuff I was not allowed to mention, but everything that is legal to mention is in this ebook.

PHP Hacks Tips and Tools For Creating Dynamic Websites

Programmers love its flexibility and speed; designers love its accessibility and convenience. When it comes to creating web sites, the PHP scripting language is truly a red-hot property. In fact, PHP is currently used on more than 19 million web sites, surpassing Microsoft's ASP .NET technology in popularity. Not surprisingly, this surge in usage has resulted in a number of PHP books hitting the market. Only one, though, takes the language beyond traditional Web programming and into mapping, graphing, multimedia, and beyond: PHP Hacks.

In PHP Hacks, author Jack Herrington wrings out his 20 years of code generation experience to deliver hands-on tools ranging from basic PHP and PEAR installation and scripting to advanced multimedia and database optimizing tricks.

On the practical side of things, PHP Hacks helps you develop more robust PHP applications by explaining how to improve your database design, automate application testing, and employ design patterns in your PHP scripts and classes. In the category of "cool," Herrington explains how to upgrade your Web interface through the creation of tabs, stickies, popups, and calendars. He even examines how to leverage maps and graphics in PHP.

Review:This book is not for WinForm developers

The Patterns that the GoF are all applicable to WinForms, but this book assumes all web developing in its examples. I bought the book because I am a .NET WinForms developer so I if you are a web developer this book may help you, but it didn’t do it for me.

I found the original GoF book, “Head First Design Patterns”, even “Design Patterns for Dummies” better than this book. Also, it is unfortunate that .NET developers have to resort to these books and do not have a definitive Patterns book in any .NET language. The “Design Patterns in C#” is OK but that book has questions placed in there on nearly every page asking you to do something that isn’t covered yet in the book which is bothersome.

.NET developers would do well to stay away from this book even if you are a patterns lover.

The Nostradamus Code: World War III (2007-2012)

Due to the pressure and scrutiny of the Inquisition, Nostradamus was forced to scramble both the
meaning and the order of his quatrains. He made sure humanity would not be able to decode them
until we had become sophisticated enough. With the discovery of the lost manuscript, that time has
finally arrived. Using cutting-edge data mining techniques, Dr. Michael Rathford sifted this complex
word puzzle searching for significant patterns and relationships. Almost immediately, he came up with
the predictive model known as The Nostradamus Code. When the prophecies-within-prophecies are
deciphered, the hidden timeline of World War III is revealed. You will read about Osama Bin Laden, the
next major terrorist attack on the US, war with Iran, the nuclear destruction of Rome, a confrontation
between the US and China/Russia, and great detail on the timing and the course of World War III.
